Luton is a large town, borough and unitary authority area of Bedfordshire, in the East of England. It has a population of 214,700 and is one of the most populous towns without city status in the United Kingdom. The town is situated on the River Lea, about 30 miles northwest of London. The town was immortalised in a 1970s Campari advert starring Lorraine Chase in which she was asked “Were you truly wafted here from paradise?” to which she answered: “Nah, Luton Airport. : Luton began when the Saxons conquered Bedfordshire in the sixth century and created a settlement called a tun by the river Lea. It is recorded in the Domesday Book as “Loitone”. : Famous Lutonians include composer David Arnold, singer Paul Young and cricketer Monty Panesar. Luton has long been associated with the hat industry and Luton Town football club are known as the Hatters. Margaret Moran, the former Labour MP for Luton South, was revealed by the Daily Telegraph to have claimed £22,000 for dry rot work at her taxpayer-funded second home in Southampton, more than 100 miles from her constituency. She was later deselected as a Labour candidate. The town has gained an unfortunate reputation as a hotbed for extremism – the English Defence League has its roots there while the July 7 bombers travelled from there to London to launch their terrorist attacks. The town’s Vauxhall plant was saved from closure earlier this year with the announcement that the new Vivaro van would be built at the site. : Luton has also been home to makers of ball bearings, gas cookers and meters. Luton has a population of 194,400 according to the latest estimate from the Office for National Statistics Luton airport, the fourth largest serving London, is a base for easyJet and Ryanair.
